I can communicate indirectly, and I do it when I’m really trying to irk someone, which is quite rare. How well does indirect communication pan out in the workplace? You’re aware that social scientists include indirect communication in their definition of the passive-aggressive personality, right? Sure, guys communicate indirectly, but they’re not as likely to defend it like women do.
Hmmmm, I wonder how well things work when both the man and the woman use indirect communication regularly….? Sometimes fine, usually bad.
Are we supposed to figure out what you really mean without telling you we’ve figured it out? Because when we verbally identify what you’re indirectly communicating, you tend to pout or have some type of negative response.
Is indirect communication a sign that the woman isn’t satisfied, that the man isn’t doing enough of what she wants/needs without her having to ask?
What’s the deal? I truly detest indirect communication, from a man or a woman.
If you continue to valiantly do what she doesn’t ask for directly, without fuss, and she still communicates indirectly on a regular basis, is she nuts and/or too demanding?

David started, “I have a major time management problem. As an editor, I often get two clients calling with assignments. They call about 10 AM and both want their projects completed by mid-afternoon. Then a third client calls about lunchtime with a crisis. So I have a lot of projects – all at once. The next day the phone is quiet.”

1. Train your customers from the get-go. Clients typically are nice people who have not a clue about what it takes to deliver your service. Turn off the phone, you realize you have just committed to an hourly rate that is a tiny proportion of your normal fee. (We’ve all done this at least once.) Either you deliver a half-baked solution or you devote lots of unpaid overtime. And either way, you’ll end up resenting the client and wondering why you got into this business in the first place. Lessons learned: Conflicting demands? You are not facing a time management challenge. You’re searching for a new strategy — a method to mesh your preferred working style with the needs of your clients – and a set of policies to protect you from your own generosity.
