Even buying an antenna costs less than most cable fees and is a one-time expense, not monthly. But choosing the right HDTV antenna will require some homework. Once some questions have been answered, you should have a better idea of which ones might be right for you.
You will need to know what channels are available over the air. These broadcasts channels are accessible by line of sight. That can be a problem if you live in a city with tall buildings on every side. But you can find out just what is out there by doing a little web surfing.
Ask at your retail dealer about which broadcast stations and what their signal strength is at your location. The list might mention those that have strong signals and those that weaker. Your choice of antenna will strongly depend on the signal strength of the desired station or stations.

Some options are more expensive. A rooftop array generally needs to be positioned to best receive a broadcast signal. If many of the stations are broadcasting from the same tower, arrays work well. But, if signals come from several directions and at different strengths, then tuning will be difficult. There are motors that allow you to change direction from inside but they can cost a lot.
Before buying a motorized antenna to point your array in the right direction, you might want to consider an omni-directional antenna. They look a bit like the starship Enterprise from the early days. The Disk shaped antenna has a very small powered amplifier that helps optimize any incoming signal. Without the amplifier, they will only bring in the strongest signals. With the amplifier they can bring in signals that directional arrays would miss.
So, while there are table top sets, directional roof arrays and omni-directional roof antennas, just which HDTV antenna you will choose will depend on a number of things. The number of available signals, the strength of those signals and the investment level you are willing to make for the quality of reception.
